For my daughter's 9th birthday her best friend gave her a baby red-eared slider aquatic turtle (scientifically named Trachemys Scripta Elegans) that her father had found in a river bank. At first, I thought, "Oh, how sweet and cute he is. This ought to be a piece of cake to care for". Boy, was I in for a surprise.
They are very cute and very sweet, but not all that easy to care for. This website should shed some light on the issues of raising these mysterious creatures. Hopefully, it will make you think twice about taking on such a big responsibility.
Too many people don't know or don't care how to properly care for sliders. This is why it is illegal to buy or sell a Red-Eared Slider with a shell diameter less than 6 inches. We didn't know this when we got our first slider "Bernard" or our baby turtle "B.B.". Bernard's shell was 2 1/2 inches in diameter and B.B.'s was only 2 inches, but since they were gifts.........we couldn't very well turn them away.
I'm not an expert on sliders, but this site offers what I've learned about these amazing animals. If you do decide to raise a slider, I hope it helps you to understand them better.
